JUNIOR YEAR NEWS STORIES

Project | College Essays
(2:20-4:10)
This story highlighted the importance of creating quality essays for students applying to college. Because this story's purpose was to inform more than entertain, finding ways to keep the audience engaged became a difficult task. We incorporated ambient sounds, unique shots, and sequences in order to achieve this task. Another goal was to cover as much information as we could in order to ensure the success of the students' college application process.
Project | Girls Soccer
(0:48-2:26)
This story focused on the MHS girls soccer team and their annual senior night game. Because this night is an important milestone in an athlete's high school career, it was crucial to capture the highlights of this event. We started off by introducing the girls soccer team in a general perspective. Through the music and broll of the girls lined up on the field, we tried to draw suspense out from the audience. Overall, this story shined a light on this event and multiple meanings behind it.
Project | Silk City Coffee
(5:38-7:15)
As part of the October News Blitz, this story was completed in under 8 hours. Silk City was a new edition to Manchester at the time, and with further investigation, we discovered that this coffee shop was more than what meets the eye. We made sure that viewers felt this way too by the stand ups in both the beginning and end. We felt that it was a creative approach to introducing this new environment to the community.

Project |  Heart Chase
(6:30-8:03)
This story recapped an important event in the MHS community. Through the use of music played during the Heart Chase as ambient sound and B-roll of people having fun while participating in the event, our story provided a good promotion for next year. We put an emphasis on capturing the aroma of the event and strongly believe that more people will participate next year because of it.
Project |  New Turf and Locker Room Renovations
(9:07-10:34)
This story discussed important changes that were coming to the school. We had the challenge of covering two subjects: the turf and the locker rooms, both of which students were anxious for. In order to talk about the impact of both, we needed to incorporate the people who are going to be affected by them the most: the coaches and players. I interviewed several of these kinds of people and used the corresponding B-roll. This way, the viewers would have been able to notice the true meaning and impact that these renovations would have on the MHS community.

Project |  PJ Day
This story told a meaningful story of a young girl with a rare form of cancer and her brother who started a fundraiser to help people like her. Because this subject had a meaningful purpose, we knew that we were going to have to bring the emotion out of the audience. Through shots of their home and feelings of hope and inspiration, this story became a nationwide success.

Project |  No More Empty Seats
This PSA was created for my midterm project. We knew that suicide prevention was a prominent and relevant topic worldwide. We wanted to think of a creative way to convey the message of suicide prevention by telling a story. This story follows a student in class who suddenly disappears towards the end of the 30 second PSA, hinting towards an act of suicide. Through this important story and the use of graphics that will inform the viewer on the subject, this PSA was an overall success.

Project |  Weather Impact
(8:46-10:36)
This story highlighted an issue that many athletes face when preparing for the spring season. Connecticut faces a wide variety of weather during this time of year and because of this,  athletes  in towns like Manchester struggle with finding  space to practice  for the upcoming season.  We gathered shots of the rain and even included the fact that other towns have am advantage over our town in order to show how important  of an issue this situation is.
Project |  Groundhog Day
This story discussed a community-wide event held in Manchester every year. The fact that our town owns the state's official groundhog made the topic interesting. We wanted people to see how this event brought the community together and through shots of people taking part in Groundhog Day, we believe that we achieved this goal.  We also tried to tell a story of this very important day to keep the viewer engaged.

Project |  Mario Mota
(0:43-2:47)
For the STN Crazy 8s competition in Anaheim, California, my group's task was to look for a homeless person and uncover their story. This was a difficult task to do but luckily we were able to find Mario Mota, a man who was willing to share his life with us. This story was really meaningful because it shows the side of the Orange County that not everyone gets to see.
Project |  Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Tyler
This story puts a spotlight one of the most inspiring teachers at MHS, Mr. Tyler. Because he is a long-time devoted member of the school community, he made for a great story idea. Since it was his last year directing the spring musical, we decided to tell the story in a way that shines a positive light on him as a teacher. Through the work of his cast, the viewer was able to see how much of an impact Mr. Tyler had on the school.

Project |  Event Cancellations
(10:41-13:04)
This story discussed a prominent issue in the MHS community. Because many events around the school were being cancelled due to a lack of attendance, we decided to get to the bottom of this problem. This story should have engaged the viewer by having more of a personal connection with the reporter and the people getting interviewed. Through interviewing all sorts of people, we were able to show how important this issue is.
Project |  Student Spotlight: Matt Kropp
(7:08-9:28)
My group decided to take a different approach to this story by letting the interviews tell the story. This became challenging because we needed to find a lot of ambient sounds and the interviews had to be thorough and specific. To make this story a little more interesting, we found ideas for sequences and overlayed the interviews with B-roll.

Project |  School Renovations
(0:46-3:00)
For our final news program of the year, my group was assigned to informing the community on the new renovation coming to the town. However, we knew that we could do more than just inform. There happened to be a deeper meaning to these renovations: that it was Manchester's attempt in modernization. We told this story and and kept the viewer engaged by doing this.
